The Rotary Club of Laguna Beach has honored Sophia Utge as student of the month for October for her success in World Languages. Sophia speaks English, Spanish, and Portuguese and has spent much of her life in Brazil and India, fueling her passion for international cultures. She aspires to study International Relations.

​A dedicated leader, Sophia is the co-president of Fashion 4 All and has earned notable awards, including First Alternate for American Auxiliary Girls State of California 2024, recognition in the Big Future National Hispanic Recognition Program 2024, and eligibility for the University of California Local Context 2024. Outside of academics, she enjoys beach volleyball, walking her dogs, reading, and listening to music.

Congrats to Kate Cheng, who has been selected as one of the students of the month for October for her achievements in mathematics and her dedication to the community. As a student representative on the city's environmental subcommittee, Kate works to bridge the district and city sustainability goals. She is also the captain of the LBHS Girls Varsity Basketball team, demonstrating her leadership both on and off the court.



  • Kate plans to pursue a degree in civil/environmental engineering at a four-year university, with a focus on sustainable urban design, transportation, and watershed management. In addi tion to her passion for sustainability, Kate enjoys studying languages.

Congratulations to Sabrina Yang, our student of the month for January 2023. Sabrina received this recognition for outstanding achievement in the Science department at Laguna Beach High School.

Sabrina, a second generation Korean American,  plans to major in Engineering or Computer Science.

She is an AP scholar with Distinction and has been on the Superintendent's Honor Roll for every semester. She plays on the LBHS Girl's Varsity Basketball team, is a section leader in the LBHS Wind Ensemble, Founder and President of the Girls Who Code Club and Secretary of the Rotary Interact Club.

The Rotary Club of Laguna Beach is pleased to recognize Melanie Falkowski as the May Student of the Month female student/athlete. Some of her favorite classes have been AP History, English and Ceramics. She is a runner and has participated in cross country and the track team. Melanie plans to attend San Diego State University next fall and will participate on their cross country and track teams. She will also study Kinesiology with the eventual goal of becoming a physical therapist.

He is described as being friendly, positive and has excelled in cooking and running small businesses. In his spare time, he enjoys horseback riding and surfing. Kyan is interested in environmental issues, international affairs and would like to eventually work for a governmental organization that helps people.
